02 Jun POPE FRANCIS NAMES NEW RECTOR FOR THE GREGORIAN

Pope Francis has named the next rector of the Pontifical Gregorian University:  Rev. Nuno da Silva Gonçalves SJ, who will succeed Rev. François-Xavier Dumortier, SJ, on September 1, 2016.

Born in Lisbon (Portugal) in 1958, Fr. Gonçalves came to the Society of Jesus and was ordained priest on July 12, 1986. He holds a Licentiate in Philosophy and Letters from the Portuguese Catholic University, a licentiate in theology and a licentiate and a doctorate in Ecclesiastical History from the Pontifical University Gregorian.

From 1998 to 1999 he was Director of the National Office for the Cultural Heritage of the Church of the Portuguese Episcopal Conference, and he was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy of the Catholic Portuguese in October 2000. In 2005, Fr. Gonçalves was called to be Provincial of the Portuguese Province of the Society of Jesus.

He returned to the Gregorian as a member of the Faculty of History and Cultural Heritage of the Church in October 2011. Subsequently, Fr. Gonçalves was appointed director of the Department of Cultural Heritage of the Church and later dean of the same faculty. He has published several studies on the Portuguese missionary history and the history of the Society of Jesus.

As of September 1, 2016,  Rev. Marek Inglot, SJ, will succeed Fr. Gonçalves as Dean of the Faculty of History and Cultural Heritage of the Church.
